A Majestic Glacier Castle
Brandenburger Haus (3274 meters) is perched on the edge of a rock above Kesselwandferner and offers great views of the spectacular mountain scenery. The Ötztal Alps’ highest refuge is often nicknamed “glacier castle”. All routes to Brandenburger Haus lead through glacier ice; the hike from Hochjochhospiz to Brandenburger Haus takes you across Kesselwandferner. From Hochjochhospiz the trail first climbs leisurely along switchbacks through rather steep meadows and then ascends steeply. The well-maintained trail then travels through a steep and rocky slope without any altitude gain before it climbs steeply once more. The views down to the crevasse and icefalls of Kesselwandferner are simply spectacular! At approx. 3000 meters you reach the relatively flat and crevasse- free glacier. The route through the glacier is fairly easy to follow thanks Thomas Pirpamer who marked it with long poles. Nonetheless: roping-up is essential here! It takes about an hour to cross the glacier in a western / northwestern direction. The last section of the tour takes you through boulders up to Brandenburger Haus which affords spectacular panoramic views. Weißkugel, Tirol’s most beautiful mountain according to some, is one of the countless peaks you can see from the refuge.
